WHAT DOES IADC DO?

The International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) is the umbrella organisation for some 100 dredging and maritime construction companies who represent the forefront of the industry and whose combined resources execute 80 percent of global dredging in the open market. These companies offer services for ports and harbours, coastal development and protection, land reclamation, offshore energy for oil and gas and wind farms, remediation of contaminated industrial sites, and beach nourishment and cruise ship harbours for recreation and tourism.

IADC’s added value:

IADC acts as a voice for the private dredging industry, promoting the industry to the general public and educating those who may come in contact with dredging, but are not aware of its many facets. IADC also communicates and cooperates with other related trade organisations, representing the dredging industry with a positive, but impartial approach.

IADC emphasises several key topics such as:

IADC ‘s activities are all part of an on-going effort to support clients, consultants and others in understanding the fundamental principles of dredging and maritime construction. Providing effective information to all involved parties is an essential element in achieving a successful dredging project.

To accomplish this goal, IADC has developed high-quality tools that have proved invaluable to reaching out to a wider audience.

SEMINARS / CONFERENCES

Over the last 20 years, IADC has developed several specialised courses:

The International Seminar on Dredging and Reclamation is an intensive, week-long course given two or three times per year, once at a fixed location in Delft, the Netherlands and in other venues on demand. The seminar challenges and guides participants to think through dredging projects from tender to contract preparation to implementation.

PUBLICATIONS

IADC supports its key messages with technical books, magazines and brochures that broaden the knowledge base about dredging for clients, consultants, students and stakeholders.

TERRA ET AQUA

Terra et Aqua is a highly respected quarterly journal presenting technical articles and research papers. Contributions come from a wide variety of authors working in the maritime industries.

FACTS ABOUT

Facts About is a series of 4-page executive summaries on subjects ranging from technological innovation and dredging equipment and environment to forms of contracts and financing. Its easy-to-read format is meant to give the uninitiated insight into specific dredging subjects.

DREDGING FOR DEVELOPMENT

Dredging for Development, published in co-operation with the International Association of Ports & Harbors, gives a birds’ eye view of the many facets of the modern-day dredging industry. A clear non-technical introduction to the complex field of dredging.

DREDGING FOR SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE

The book Dredging for Sustainable Infrastructure gives state-of-the-art guidance on how to design, implement and manage a water infrastructure project with a dredging component to project owners, regulators, consultants, designers and contractors.

HYDRAULIC FILL MANUAL

Hydraulic Fill Manual, a combined effort of CIRIA, CUR and IADC, provides a comprehensive description of the necessary tools, equipment, surveys and other information to successfully work with hydraulic fill.

FORM OF CONTRACT FOR DREDGING AND RECLAMATION WORKS

Form of Contract for Dredging and Reclamation Works. Dredgers Contract. Agreement, General Conditions, Rules for Adjudication and Notes for Guidance was developed in cooperation with FIDIC (International Federation of Consulting Engineers), specifically for use in the dredging industry. It includes all essential commercial provisions, for use in all types of dredging and reclamation works and ancillary construction with a variety of administrative arrangements.

THIRD PARTY ARTICLES

IADC also cooperates with industry magazines to publish articles pertaining to the progress and innovations in the dredging community. The worldwide demand for information continues to grow as the issues of overpopulation – the need for more land; increased waterborne world trade – expansion of ports; climate change – coastal protection; and environment and sustainability, continue to demand ever more state-of-the art solutions. IADC gladly shares non-propriety knowledge that its member companies have acquired through long-term investments in R&D.

COMMITTEES

IADC maintains a number of standing committees that analyse the dredging market and provide information to members and to third parties of the state of the dredging industry in general and its members in particular.

Dredging in Figures Committee

The Secretariat collects information of the members on the estimated dredging turnover in past year and the Dredging in Figures Committee evaluates the input via a Delphi-panel method. The final estimate is presented at the AGM and published on IADC’s website.

Register Plant Committee

The Register Plant Committee collect data about the plant of all IADC members and supervises its verification. The information is published by Clarksons in its Dredger Register, which is a comprehensive guide to the worldwide dredging fleet and available on IADC’s website.

Indexation Costs Standards Committee

CIRIA has published the guide to cost standards for dredging equipment in 2009. To keep the information up to date the Indexation Costs Standards Committee provides an annual indexation of this guide.

Safety Committee

IADC has established a safety committee that enables its members to share best practices among its members. The members embrace their leading role in improving safety within the industry, both directly through the members and indirectly through the supply chain. When it comes to safety, the members consider themselves partners and not competitors.

Legal Committee

The Legal Committee has periodically helped to update the FIDIC dredging contract.

Sustainability Committee

The Sustainability Committee focuses on 6 out of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and the book Dredging for Sustainable Infrastructure is the starting point for its work. It collects data concerning the dredged amount of sand. It cooperates with UNEP in its aim to make the use of sand more sustainable. In addition, informative meetings with selected investors in sustainable marine infrastructure are initiated.

AWARDS

YOUNG AUTHOR AWARD

The recognition of outstanding work in the dredging industry is important to making young people aware of the dredging industry and motivating them to choose dredging as a career. The awards for the best paper at selected conferences by an author 35 years of age or younger rewards their scientific and engineering research.

All IADC activities are dedicated to promoting the skills, integrity and reliability of its members, as well as explaining the contributions of the dredging industry to worldwide prosperity in general.

IADC SAFETY AWARD

The IADC Safety Award is intended to encourage the development of safety skills on the job and to reward people and companies demonstrating diligence in safety awareness in the performance of their profession. The Award will recognise the exceptional safety performance of a particular project, ship, team or employees. Innovation is also an essential quality for the Award. As such, the innovative elements and new methodology and/or techniques of a nomination is also taken into consideration.
